Is your skin showing signs of sun damage or premature aging? Chemical peels are among the most popular noninvasive cosmetic procedures in the country, offering a deep level of exfoliation that at-home scrubs and masks can’t match.
At Florida Dermatology Associates, led by Ruben Moreno, MD, we provide a variety of professional-grade resurfacing treatments designed to refresh dull, tired complexions. Our team works with you to develop a personalized plan that addresses your concerns while protecting your skin’s long-term health.
Whether you choose a light “lunchtime” peel or a deeper treatment, your results depend largely on how you care for your skin during the healing phase. Here, we share five aftercare tips to help you manage temporary sensitivity and achieve the best possible results.
In the days following your peel, your skin may flake or shed as the dead surface layers separate from the healthy tissue underneath. Though it can be tempting to pick or peel these loose patches, doing so increases your risk of infection, scarring, and permanent hyperpigmentation (dark spots).
Be patient, allowing the peeling process to happen naturally. Focus on keeping your hands away from your face to prevent the spread of bacteria. If your skin feels tight or itchy as it begins to shed, apply some extra moisturizer and/or a cool compress to soothe and hydrate it.
During the initial healing phase, skin is extremely delicate and vulnerable to the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Even brief sun exposure in the early days can result in irritation and damage.
For deeper peels, avoid the sun for several weeks until your skin has healed, while lighter peels may only require a few days of rest indoors. Once you’re past the raw stage, apply a mineral-based SPF 30 or higher every morning and wear a wide-brimmed hat outdoors.
A gentle, hydrating routine is essential after a chemical peel. If you use products with active ingredients, such as retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids on the surface of your skin, they can cause irritation or chemical burns, slowing your healing progress.
Until your skin fully heals, stick to a soap-free, fragrance-free cleanser and the specific ointments or moisturizers recommended by our team. Only reintroduce your regular anti-aging or acne products once the peeling is complete and your skin no longer feels tight or sensitive.
A chemical peel temporarily disrupts the skin’s barrier — the outermost layer that keeps moisture in and bacteria and irritants out. Without its protection, moisture evaporates rapidly, leaving healing skin dry, irritable, and prone to cracking.
Apply moisturizer or barrier cream as often as needed to keep that tight, dry feeling at bay. Keeping the area moisturized helps prevent excessive flaking and painful cracks.
An increase in body temperature causes the blood vessels in your face to dilate, which can enhance redness, swelling, and discomfort during the first few days of recovery.
Steer clear of intense workouts, hot showers, and saunas while your skin is still healing. Sweat can be particularly irritating to raw skin due to its salty content, and may cause small blisters or inflammation if it gets trapped under the peeling layers.
If you desire a treatment that delivers deep exfoliation and a radiant, refreshed complexion, our team can help you find the right peel for your needs. Call us today or book online to schedule a consultation with the experts at Florida Dermatology Associates.
