Maintaining Your Botox® Results During Summer
Can high summer temperatures actually change how your cosmetic injections settle? There’s more to it than you might think. Discover the secret to navigating the Florida heat without compromising your new look.

According to data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Botox® is the nation’s most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure — and for good reason. It’s a fast, effective way to soften stubborn wrinkles for a fresh, youthful glow.

If you want to turn back the clock on your complexion, the providers at Florida Dermatology Associates are here to help. Board-certified dermatologist Ruben Moreno, MD, and our team offer a range of advanced, nonsurgical treatments to address the signs of aging, including Botox injections.

However, maintaining optimal results during a scorching Florida summer requires some strategy. Read on to learn why the heat makes a difference and how you can keep your complexion flawless all season long.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable neuromodulator that relaxes the facial muscles responsible for unwanted dynamic wrinkles. These are the lines that appear when you make certain facial expressions, like crow’s feet around the eyes or frown lines between the brows.

How does the heat affect Botox results?

Once we inject the medication, it takes 24 to 48 hours for Botox to bind fully to the nerve receptors in the targeted muscles. Keeping your face and body cool during this period is crucial.

When you get too warm, your blood vessels dilate (expand) and your circulation increases, which can dilute the Botox or cause it to move away from the injection site. High temperatures also increase the chance of bruising and visible swelling after treatment.

To make sure your product settles exactly where you want it, avoid sunbathing, saunas, and strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours after your injections. Hold off on consuming alcohol or anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen, which can also raise blood pressure, and refrain from rubbing or massaging the treatment area.

Preventing sun damage

After that 48-hour window, you’re free to enjoy the summer heat and return to your regular exercise routine. However, diligent sun protection is more important than ever.

UV rays don’t “break down” Botox or shorten the lifespan of the treatment, but they still take a serious toll on your skin. Unprotected UV exposure destroys your natural collagen over time, which can lead to new lines and deeper creases, making your results seem less noticeable.

Protect your investment — and your skin health — by wearing a broad-spectrum SPF every day and avoiding direct sun during peak hours.

Planning your treatments strategically

Since your full results may take between 7 and 14 days to appear after treatment, a little planning goes a long way — especially during the busy summer season. Booking your appointment a few weeks before an event or vacation ensures you look refreshed and radiant when it matters most.

Depending on your metabolism and other factors, Botox injections typically last three to six months. As you begin to notice the effects wearing off, we recommend scheduling touch-up appointments to maintain a consistent look.

Over time, regular treatments can train the facial muscles to remain relaxed, extending the longevity of your future results.
